This is a 5th grade mimio interactive lesson that can be taught over 2 or 3 days. It is an introduction to poetry explaining what poetry is,poetry elements, example poems with these elements, a video of a rhyme poem (Between the Lions PBS kids) being read aloud, rhyming patterns, example poems with rhyming patterns have students figure out the pattern, repetition in poetry with example poem by Shel Silverstein (students highlight the examples in the poem), Onomatopoeia and alliteration meanings with example poems, Edgar Allen Poe alliteration poem, Imagery meaning with example poem by Jack Prelutsky, Figures of speech highlight examples in poems( not taught in this lesson just reviewed), Example poem of simile, example poem of metaphor, example poem of personification by J. Patrick Lewis, Last slide video of a GED class teacher reading a poem aloud and going over the meaning of the poem with the class, also last slide discusses next lesson to students on forms of poetry and gives common core 5th grade standards.
