MMLB'd: Countable and Uncountable Nouns

The "Before" version of this activity served as a great jumping point around which we were able to build a full lesson! The author created several great activity pages to teach the two concepts introduced in this lesson – countable and uncountable nouns, which are taught when learning English as a second language. We have taken this lesson and built upon it using Quality Content Criteria (described below) with a specific focus on providing many opportunities for the student to practice the skill we want them to learn. The resulting "After" version is a high quality interactive lesson that engages students in active learning.

Countable and Uncountable nouns

I thought this was a very interesting lesson. I have taught Spanish and English, but had never heard the term "countable" nouns before. The lesson is very well done and interesting, and has a lot of variety. However, I think it is important we work for accuracy and be careful before we put something out there for everyone to use. I don't know if these were the original creator's errors, or if they got added with the revisions, but I found several errors - ice cream and jello both seem to me to be uncountable by the definitions given, and trips is a correct plural, so should be countable. It seems to me that you have to be careful to explain to students whether you are talking about whole pizzas, pies, and cakes, or pieces of them. Also, on the voting portion, questions 5 and 7 have the same answer choices. Sorry to be so negative!

Thank you for sharing your input. I know that this is a challenging topic and we did our share of research prior to remaking this lesson as it is not a concept that we had taught either. I agree with you on several of the changes and have updated the lesson accordingly and reposted. I also agree that it will be important for the teacher to be very clear on whether they are referring to a whole or a piece when they are talking about some of the food items. Thank you for helping us make the content more accurate. We hope that you will find the lesson and the lesson format helpful.
