Thank you for submitting the M&M Math lesson to the Make My Lesson Better Group! The "Before" version of this activity served as a great jumping off point for us to build a full lesson around! The author created several great activity pages to teach the two concepts introduced in this lesson – fact families and missing addends. We have taken this lesson and built upon it using Quality Content Criteria (described below) with a specific focus on providing many opportunities for the student to practice the skill we want them to learn. The resulting "After" version is a high quality interactive lesson that engages students in active learning.

Quality Content Criteria

  • Focused on Student interactivity
  • Student focused objectives
  • Observable objectives
  • Measurable objectives
  • Assessment appropriate to objective
  • Many opportunities to practice skills
  • Screen uncluttered
  • Animation used with purpose
  • Easy to difficult
  • Few to many
  • Irrelevant cues
  • Student interactivity

If you are using our "After" lesson in your classroom, please comment to let us know what you think!

Awesome Lesson!

My daughter and I just practiced this exact concept for homework tonight, and this was a perfect review for her...she LOVED IT! I love your graphics, design and ease of use and can't wait to use this in my own classroom. Your work is exciting!

Excellent lesson!!

My students would benefit from this lesson because it addresses several different learning styles. The tactile-kinesthetic learners will benefit by using real M and M's to complete math facts and visual learners will benefit through the use of the lesson content being displayed with the Mimio and projector onto the whiteboard. There is also an interactive component which the students will find engaging. This is a wonderful resource which will reinforce math facts and fact families with my students.

m&m fact family

I love how you put M&Ms in the lesson. This would also be good with Skittles. I tried this lesson and actually gave the children at their seats M&M's to use as each child got to come to the board and work.
