Insect Addition

Total views: 8660

Students have fun rolling the dice and adding insects to the jars. They then write the corresponding number sentence (sums to 12.)

-On slides #3 through #8 students take turns looking at the number of insects in each jar and then fill in the boxes to complete the number sentence to show how many insects there are altogether.

-On slides #9 through #14 students take turns rolling the die, then place that number of insects in the second jar and write the corresponding number sentence.

-On slides #15 through #20 students take turns rolling the two dice, then place that number of insects in the two jars, and write the corresponding
number sentence.

* Students at their seats may use mini dry-erase whiteboards or
paper and pencil to write the number sentences for each slide while
waiting their turn at the board.

LOVE THIS! I teach high

LOVE THIS! I teach high school students with significant intellectual disabilities. Some of them are working on a pre-algebra skills and others struggle with 1:1 correspondence. It's hard to find age appropriate activities for this group. Thank you for sharing this!

Insect addition

Fantastic pages! Great way to show two parts being made into one!I will use this with my class but might add a sum jar to check the answer, pull all the insects into the sum jar and count. This would make awesome Kagan activity with numbered heads for the students to use white boards to find answer before relealing the answer! ABSOLUTELY love it!!

I love this lesson! I think it's great that you included different ways for students to participate...having the bugs already in the jar, rolling the cube to determine the number of bugs, and allowing students to create their own story problems. Great job!

Insect Addition

This is a great lesson. My students loved the activities and pictures. It was wonderful that the lesson got progressively more complicated. As my students got comfortable with one part of the lesson, they were challenged more.

Insect Math

I LOVE this lesson! It is hands on, full of variety and just plain fun! How could you NOT want to learn how to add?!? I also appreciated the number of pages you built into it. It offers a ton of practice opportunities and even more important, plenty of chances to use the "Magic Pen!"
