Ask a Master

Ask a Master allows you to contact a Mimio Master to pose a question, raise an issue, or explore a situation on any topic. Masters are practicing teachers, tech coordinators, and other educators who have completed a rigorous course of study on how to use interactive teaching and interactive technology products in the classroom. Their answers to your queries will add new ideas and methods to your teaching.

Question:

After a summer of no use, I have set up my Mimio and calibrated. How do I save my calibration settings so I don't need to do this each time?

Answer:

You have asked a critical question that many educators face after coming back from summer vacations, saving their calibration settings. It's a straightforward task where you open the Mimio Notebook and select Tools --> Settings --> Interactive from the pull down menu and then check the option to "Use previous calibration". Click apply and OK. You are now all set. I don't recommend that this setting be saved if your classroom is on a lower level and you have classrooms right above you. The movement on the second level could shift your projection if your projector is mounted to the ceiling throwing off the calibration. As always I encourage you to check out all the other Ask a Master submissions and responses for additional tips and suggestions!

Question:

Do teachers have to create their own lessons or can the mobile app be used with MimioConnect lessons that have already been created?

  • Submitted By:
    Shelly T.

Answer:

The easiest answer to your question is…YES! There are actually three modes available when using the MimioMobile app. In each mode, you can use MimioStudio lessons that you have created or those that have already been created and downloaded from MimioConnect.

MimioMobile gives you the option to Collaborate with any MimioStudio lesson. Using the Collaborate mode, you can ‘send’ a MimioStudio lesson to students with the MimioMobile app on their mobile devices. They’ll be able to interact with the lesson right on their device. Currently, you are limited to using the Collaborate mode with only nine student devices at a time. Mimio will be releasing an update to the software shortly which will allow unlimited students to collaborate on their devices.

Another mode is Assessment. You can use all of your classroom mobile devices for conducting assessments. Assessments can be delivered as open-response questions as well as traditional multiple choice/true-false.

The third mode you can use with the MimioMobile app is the Control mode. Using this mode, you can give individual student control one at a time of anything on your computer, including websites and any resources. Giving and taking back control are easily managed.

Question:

Why can I download and view some lessons directly from the featured lessons on the home page and not others?

  • Submitted By:
    Martha C.
  • Date:
    Jan. 20, 2014

Answer:

The featured lessons and activities that scroll on MimioConnect's homepage can be downloaded by clicking on the content you are interested in. Once you click on it, you are brought to the location where you can find a description and the content can be downloaded. If the content is a lesson (which has a .ink file extension in its title next to the green download button), it can be downloaded, clicked on and opened for viewing. If the content that you are interested in has a (.mcf) file extension, this denotes a gallery. Even though it can be easily downloaded, it needs to be imported into the notebook gallery to view all the contents.

Question:How can I use symbols like subset and not subset and others symbols within my MimioStudio interactive lessons?

Answer:

MimioStudio Notebook makes it possible for you to use mathematical symbols in your lessons. One option is to create a file within your Gallery to hold commonly used words and symbols. To do this you can screen clip these items directly from a Word Document and add them into your Gallery. Another option you may want to try is to use the ALT key codes on your keyboard when entering text into a text box in MimioStudio Notebook. Click here for a list of common keyboard shortcuts that might help you.
