Using mimio in the High School Classroom

I am a K-12 Educational Technology Specialist. I work with all teachers on various projects and support them with their classroom mimio. I struggle with getting the high school teachers to use their mimio. I have created lesson templates for them, provided them with website resources, and have offered in class support. I would love to hear any suggestions or ways your teachers are using mimio on a high school level.

Training!

Showing us the possibilities and asking us to set reasonable goals is key. I am the only one in the English department that bothers to use it. It is new this year, so I pushed myself to train. I am giving myself the goal to create a file per unit and will build upon these each year. Even if I simply use it as a screen annotation to get students out of the seats to do any of the following: grammar and sentence structure, paragraph revision, or find X literary device (such as a simile) in a fiction text. Sometimes my goal for the class period is to write with the Mimio instead of messing up the white board with the smelly marker!

Getting HS teacher buy in

Hi Lynn,

I'm the only HS teacher in my school using Mimio (as of right now). My school already has a ton of another type of interactive white board. I think the hardest part is time. In order to be successful you have to use it 2-3 times a week or more. And in order to use it 2-3 times/week we have to have time to create the lessons. If it's just a lecture lesson that takes no time, but if you want to include interactivity and voting that's going to take time. I know we have prep periods but I use that time to help students or grade so it's difficult to get the lessons done. If you can get maybe 2 teachers to buy in then they can split up lessons so it feels like less work. Hope this helps.

using mimio in hs

as a high school teacher it is tough to use. The students like it when I do use it in class its just finding the time to set it all up. I find that if i make myself use it during the week for even the small stuff I tend to make more time to set things up in mimo. The lessons I've learned through the Mimio Core Skills course and the Mimio Advanced Course have made me more excited about using it in the fall. My suggestion is to sign your teachers up for training because sometimes we are just scared to dive into using the technology. good luck!

Time to create content

Time limitations are the greatest obstacle I face in effective Mimio use in my high school classroom. The tool is relatively new for me and I simply haven't had time to create a lot of interactive lessons. I share your sentiment. Hopefully with more adoption and use of Mimio, collaboration of lesson content will increase. As of now, I find very little on Mimio Connect that I can actually use in my upper level mathematics classes.

Time to create

I agree that time is at a premium. I teach high school science, and find that collaborating with my fellow teachers is a great time saver in the long run. For example, I'll create the lesson in Mimio for one chapter or unit, and another teacher will create the lesson for another chapter. We don't have planning time together, but use dropbox to save our work, and can access it at home as well as at school. We critique and 'tweak' lessons, and are constantly on the look out for great animations and clips we can add to our lessons. With a little pre-planning, we can make sure we have interactive lessons for our students as the year progresses. Once a lesson is made, it takes very little time to make changes that are needed for the next school year.

As for the content on MimioConnect - upper level lessons are needed, so please add yours as you create them!

Using mimio in the high schools classroom

I use my mimio for everything - from vocabulary review, to presenting new information, and for interactive flash animations.
When I first started using mimio, I had tons of ppt presentations that I used each year. By now, I've imported most of them into mimio, and added other things to them. What I taught the teachers in my school to do with mimio was to use the screen annotation feature with their existing presentations to encourage note taking. 'What ever I underline, you write down. If I add a word or a definition, you write that down.' The English teachers also use this feature to bring students to the board to edit sentences or passages.

The mimio pad is wonderful for getting me out from in front of the classroom. I teach science, and show videos and video segments as part of my teaching. The pad allows me to pause videos easily to ask questions and to clarify points. I'm not tied to my computer. I've also used the pad to have my students underline, highlight, or circle what they think is 'note' worthy in my presentations or .ink files.

Using in a High School Classroom

I find this approach to be very helpful. Mimio is new to our school and we have 3 interactive white boards that I do not believe have ever been used. After showing teaches how to use Mimio, I think using their ppt presentations initially with the screen annotation feature will be helpful to get by-in and will encourage creativity as they go along.

Encouraging teachers

Yes! And encourage all your teachers to go ahead and create a MimioConnect account. Quality lessons are being shared daily - and teachers who are not comfortable with creating their own lessons can upload lessons that can be used immediately.

relatability

I agree with some of the other comments - mimio is useful for items such as flashcards - I see some of the language teachers here using it for that. It also has great templates for some specific lessons & creating games to use in the classroom that are relatable for the kids (example: the deal or no deal template - http://www.mimioconnect.com/content/lesson/deal_or_no_deal_review_game_template/inin.com. That's one of the hardest thing to do as a high school teacher - remain relatable!

LOR Idea

I believe that teachers are often so busy that finding time for individual teachers to create meaningful content can be challenging. One of my goals this year is to work with the District Content Coordinators to create mimio lessons that correlate directly to their courses. We are currently using Angel, a LMS in our district and working with the coordinators to post course content in the course learning object repositories. Access to these repositories will allow teachers to link to course materials including mimio lessons. I am hopeful that as the high school teachers use these mimio lessons they will see the impact and value to their instruction and this will serve to build a need for additional support to create their own.

I have experienced the same

I have experienced the same struggles you do. I look at it this way. As I share ideas and support the teachers with whatever they do technologically, I've come to appreciate all progress forward whether it be large or small scale gains. The biggest gains I've experienced on the high school level has been with the world language teachers using their mimio. I'm so appreciative that more teachers have begun to be open and receptive to new ideas. As time goes on I'm sure that they'll begin to have the confidence to build on those ideas that I've shared with them and incorporate them into their classes.
