Ways to use Mimio with students with disabilities

I teach students with sevre, mild, moderate intelectual and physical disabilities and also autistic. I use mimio a lot and have found that my students' attention span and time focused has increased. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same. I would to exchange activities with other teachers who teach 5 anf 6 grades of students with the same types of disabilitues.

Special Education Students

I also teach students with special needs, but not at the elementary school level. I work in a high school setting. Many of the activities I do are presented at the elementary level (reading & writing especially). I enjoy using the mimio to have my students interact with content. I am still at entry level...but trying to incorporate the mimio into more of my teaching. Definitely interested in collaborating with other spec. ed. teachers at any level. The more hands on I can make my teaching, the more my students learn and stay engaged.

Students with Autism

I find that using the Mimio helps all of my students in a variety of ways. It is novel and helps to train specific skills such as sorting, matching, and distinguishing items. It can be used with a variety of interactive software that we would typically use with a touchscreen for students with less accurate fine motor skills. Best of all after helping all my student explore a variety of writing implements, I have taught them to hold the stylus gently by holding it like a large marker, and wow it helps to reinforce this skill when they do have to draw or write on paper. Another important thing is that the same student that benefit from use of a slant board seem to blossom from drawing and writing with the notebook pencil. It is a great confidence builder that encourages their visual attending skills.

Special Education Classrooms

I have not actually used MIMIO's with all of my SE classrooms as my function is to get the technology to the teachers and have the teacher incorporate it into their classrooms.
However I have seen several rooms use the MIMIO, and the students LOVE IT! They are engaged and very attentive! They really like going up and touching the board and have something happen! MIMIO is so easy to use that sometimes when the teacher is absent, the students hook up the MIMIO for the sub. (This is in a higher function ASD room).
I am in the midst of incorporating MIMIO's in 7 differnt schools, each with a unique set of logistics and users. I am looking forward to the challenge!

BIOLOGY

I have personally noticed that some of the more shy, special ed students tend to feel a greater comfort level when using the pad with interactive mimio lesson. The students are in mixed classes with great diversity of learning styles. They are not as willing to participate when asked to come to the front of the room. The confidence level has become much stronger since we began usage of mimio products.

For students who do not write

I think that the Mimio notebook and tools would be perfect for students who are not physically able to write. We struggle with "how do students who are laptop dependent complete worksheets"? My son is one of these students, so I have a bit more interest in this. In the past, he's used a label maker to type his answers, print out the label, and stick it to the worksheet. Excellent method, but label tapes are pricey. Why not load the Mimio software to his computer? Then the teacher can scan in his worksheets as PDF files, then copy and paste them into .ink files. Then my son can create text boxes right into the file to answer, then email the assignment back to his teacher.

Mimio with special needs students

I also use the mimio with my students with disabilities in Pre-k and K. They love it. I use it everyday with reading, math and language arts. They are all watching and waiting for their turn. I have noticed a major increase in their attention to task and waiting longer while attending. It has made a huge difference with my autism students participation in group time.

I have seen an increase in

I have seen an increase in engagement with all students that I have worked with. In our AI classroom, students have responded to Mimio Activities with links to Starfall.com. It amazes me on how well they can manipulate the different functions!

children with special needs & the interactive board

I have been using the interactive board in my classroom for 3 years now. Our school has boards in every room now. Students have become more independent, focused and motivated towards their learning. They come into the classroom each morning and sit and wait in front of the board waiting for the bell, so the teacher can begin the morning greetings and calendar maths on the board. Students with special needs usually have a fairly short attention span, but when the board is on, full of colour, sound and movement,or when they see themselves on the screen and can write their own names on the board, time and focus is no longer an issue. Not a day goes by in the classroom, that I am not humbled by the students growth in self esteem, confidence and learning successes.

Special needs

I am usually mostly in an inclusion setting, but this year I have a couple of Resource classes. This is the first year I have been able to use the Mimio with my own lesson plans. I find that the kids do seem to respond very well to the interaction with the board. I have been surprised at the level in which they work with the technology. I am so glad that I didn't let fear of the unknown stop me from using this new avenue.

Using Mimio for students with disabilities

We have 3 Autistic units at our elementary school. We have students from 5 - 12 years old at the present time. We have seen their interest and attention span grow with the use of Mimio. The older classroom even uses it as an incentive at the end of the day to help modify behavior during earlier parts of the day.

They have been able to interact well with the technology and seem to grasp the concepts well.

Question:

I'd like to create some Valentine's Day lessons that have heart shaped reveals. Are there any heart-shaped reveals in the Mimio gallery?

Answer:

Thank you for such a creative question. This is something that I'm sure many of our community members could benefit from as they design their Valentine's lessons too! There is a gallery of fun...
