Technology--Student Ownership

Integrating technology regularly in my classroom has improved my student's ownership of their learning. Students are plugged in from the time that they wake up in the morning until they go to bed, so capitalizing on this to improve learning has been paramount. Students like the feeling of control which has increased their accountability as well as engagement.

Technology in the classroom.

We have the technology in our classrooms, however, we weren't using it to it's fullest extent. We,the other instructor and I, made a plan. Now that we use it every day, at least four out of the five days, the students are really excited to come to class, use the technolgy, as well as lead the class in it's usage. We task the class leaders to create their presentation in Mimio, present it to their class, and they love it. Some students are well versed on this program.

Classroom Arrangement

I am interested in how other teachers arrange their classroom to use Mimio more effectively. I use Mimio for whole group instruction and also practice during Centers. I give formal presentations, and we use it for games. I do vocabulary and display brainstorming and other writing ideas or references on it. I wish I had 3 Mimio boards! I did finally have the brainstorm to have Mimio installed on one of my student computers so that students could reference prior activities on their own. But anyway, I would like to know how desks are arranged in some of your classrooms, in relation to the Mimio board, and if you use carpets to have students sit on.

Another Benefit

I can see that another benefit to using the mimio is when an inspirational idea gets spread all over the whiteboard during one class, it can be saved, shared, and expanded upon during another class. What a great way to share ideas between classes without losing important/creative steps.

Technology in the Everyday Classroom

I did not grow up with computers, in fact the most "modern" technology in my school was the typewriter. I am learning right along with my students how to use the Mimio technology and I think it is GREAT. No matter how well or deficient a lesson turns out it is learning for both my students and myself.

Way to Go!!

I could not agree with you more. I did not grow up with technology either and am very aware that I am a "learner" all the time with new technology. It is exactly that challenge that I love! The postive attitude that we can bring to the classroom and model for our peers brings so much value not only in technology but in teaching how to be a life long learner with grace and laughter! Your students are so lucky to have you as their teacher! I look forward to seeing your lessons posted!

Digital natives expect to use technology

If I've learned one thing about incorporating technology in my classroom, it's that my high school students, those "digital natives", expect to use technology in the classroom. The use of Mimio in my lessons engages these digital learners in the lesson, and when I put the technology in their hands, they eagerly take it and begin creating amazing products, as if to say to me, "What took you so long to get in the boat?!"

Technology

Technology has changed my classroom environment. My students are less likely to be off task and are more engaged since I have started to incorporate technology within my lesson plans. Showing a quick video to grab their attention or doing hands on lesson using Mimio. It has really helped eliminate boredom which in turn helps eliminate behavior problems. My students are learning faster because they think they are always laying a game! I love it.

I love how excited my students are whenever I start to use the interactive white board. Even if they don't know what the lesson is about, they are excited. It is a lot of work to create new lessons and activities, but it's important to stay current and continually search for things that work in the classroom. I am taking the mimio master's courses right now and I like how it is forcing me to become a "master" of our new technology. Each week I walk away with new lessons that I can use in my classroom.

Technology

It is exciting to see the class react to the Mimio. I am taking the Mimio course too and agree that it's forcing me to become more active with the latest technology. I feel my class this year is better prepared because I can create lessons and search for lessons that help to reinforce what I am teaching. The Mimio helps to grab their attention and allows them to become involved. They can get up and move and interact with the Mimio.

Adding Technology to My Classroom

I have wanted to implement more technology in my classroom for quite some time but I thought it would require a significant amount of my time planning and preparing each lesson. I have been putting it off saying, "Next year I'll do it." This year I took the plunge! Well, it does take extra time preparing the lessons but my lessons are creative and engaging so it is worth the extra time. My kids enjoy the technology embedded in my lessons especially the Mimio lessons and the video links. I have found students who were reluctant to participate due to language barriers or learning issues are now willing to take a risk if Mimio is involved! I now have my power points, Mimios, songs, video links and web sites hyperlinked right to my lesson plans. I no longer fumble for the next item I need, I just click on the link and off we go!!

Organizing My Lessons

I have not been relunctant to incorporate technology into my classroom, but I have lacked the time necessary to organize everything into a mimio lesson plan. Therefore, I am taking the mimio masters class in order to "force" me to get to it. Once of the lessons I put together for my creative writing class required four different hyperlinks to website videos and another four hyperlinks to specific pictures. The nature of the lesson required me to not display everything at once, and mimio allowed me to open each of the files as I wanted. Last year when I taught this lesson, I had four different web sites open and four different pictures copied and pasted into a mimio document. This made my lesson clean and easy to display. The time it took to put together was rather minimal, and I'll have it already to go next year. Even if I want to change the links, it will only take me seconds.

This is the first year that I

This is the first year that I will have used the mimio. I use a variety of methods to teach. The students still love the power points, and to keep them fresh, I upgrade them each year. I was at first reluctant to use the mimio, as it would take time to develop lessons pertinent to my classes. I then realized, that instead of using the time to upgrade power points, I could develop mimio lessons that are new and interactive. This is just another way to gather student interest, and to keep me "current" with new technology.

Training

I would definitely tell your teachers to sign up for MimioConnect, and start looking at what other teachers are doing. The Make My Lesson Better group is a great resource for making sure lessons are interactive and focused on learning objectives. Look for the files and videos put together by this group for some good training ideas.

Why Mimio?

I am working on getting applying for a grant to get the mimio, I wanted to know what are some really higher level teaching tips that I could put in my grant application to make them want to give me the mimio. I know all the things about a great technology tool, but does anyone have any ideas on projects they have done that have challenged their students?

Grant info

I don't know if these are higher level teaching tips but they are definitely an enhanced way to teach. When I consider using various reading strategies, whether it be pre-reading, reading or post reading, the interactive gallery lets you create questions before the class- during the class and compile either instantly or later to show the students results. Such as the KWL method. When you are starting a new unit ask what the students know, list these on the board and keep adding new pages. Read a selection, view pdfs, go online and check around, while doing this keep adding the "what they know" to additional pages. After the unit is complete or nearing the evaluation, cover all the pages from this interactive unit for the what they "learned" section. the test can even be multiple choice, fill in or use the drop shade to reveal one questions at a time. The amount of paper saved and scan-trons is amazing. That alone should make any state give you the grant money. It is a wonderful teaching tool with endless possibilities. Good Luck

Exciting

Christina,

How exciting to be writing a grant for a Mimio for your classroom! Are you trying to get a full Mimio Classroom set or just the MimioTeach?

There are so many ways to use the MimioTeach in your classroom! I took at look at your profile and see that you teach Middle School math. With that in mind, I have seen MimioRecorder used very successfully to capture the steps to solving a problem and then saved and posted on the web for students to use at home when they are doing homework (great home>school connection) or at school if they have been absent or need to review the process.

Students can also create these videos teaching the concepts to each other and capturing them to reuse. Students can also use all of the MimioTools to create a lesson demonstrating their understanding of the concept.

One of my teachers who is currently taking the Mimio Masters series remade an activity from MimioConnect to focus on the concepts they were learning in math. It was a Connect Four activity. She uploaded the Mimio lesson file to our Learning Management System so the students could work in teams on their laptops and play the Connect Four activity. She shared with me that was a great success!

Mimio is presenting a workshop at FETC on grant writing. I am not sure if you are attending. If you would like more information or if I can help to connect you with the Mimio presenter for that workshop please let me know.

I hope some of these ideas help! If you have a direction in mind and need some help fine tuning it please let me know.

Using Mimio vote

First, I'd like to echo the comments about how awesome it's been to have the mimio in my classroom. My classroom is very wide and narrow with the white board at one end of the long width wall. My students were having a hard time seeing the board when they sit down at the other end. To tackle this, we installed a second projector that shoots onto a pull down screen.

I teach elementary music and as a specialist, it's hard to consistently track student progress with only 30 minutes two times a week. Our school just acquired the Mimio Vote hardware and I'm super excited to be trying this out. I'm hoping that using the voting technology will help with creating quality assessments for my students as well as a give me an opportunity to assess my own lessons. By incorporating test questions into lessons, I'll be able to check student progress and identify those who might need a little extra help but are too shy to ask for it.

I would love to hear from people about their experiences with the voting system to see how it's worked for them.

Mimio vote

I just started using Mimio vote today in my classroom. I'm very excited about it as well as my students. Is there anyway I can see who missed an answer when it is teacher led? I can't remember that from my training session and can't find any notes that I might have taken in this problem. If how please list the steps to take.

Totally Agree

Stephen,

I think you are right on! One of the things I love most about MimioVote, besides the awesome design, is the fact that you embed questions inside your MimioStudio Notebook - it is all in one place. That allows you to build you content and then check for comprehension as you move through your lesson - such great formative assessment! Not only do you evaluate student understanding of the lesson but you can reflect on your own teaching and effectiveness.

I know there are many music teachers out there who will be thrilled to see your lessons posted on MimioConnect! I will look forward to seeing how you incorporate MimioVote into your lessons.

Since I'm a new teacher, it

Since I'm a new teacher, it hasn't really changed what I was doing before. But it has saved me a ton of work! Instead of making charts and flashcards and printing them out big and laminating them and them sticking velcro on to them to make them interactive and finding somewhere to store all these things - I just open up Mimio Notebook and in minutes the lesson is done. With Mimio I find the majority of my time is spent in planning the resource for its greatest impact, not on what is physically and financially viable.

On top of saving the work needed to create (and store) physical objects, the kids ADORE the Mimio and will fight to be allowed to use it. It's a great tool for discipline to have something the kids love so much, because it's a great motivator for them to prove that they deserve to use it. It also encourages them to pay attention because if they are allowed to come up and use it they need to know their work to avoid making mistakes in front of the class (which they hate, although I emphasise that making mistakes is part of learning).

Technology IS changing the World of Education

Technology integration into curriculum is enhancing student engagement, and hopefully student achievement. As a learning coach, my role is to help teachers to embed technology into their instruction as a seamless tool to increase retention and the engagement of learning. Technology has changed the pace of learning and has increased an awareness of how students learn best. Today's kids must be educated in a different format, with a different set of the 3 R's....it's no longer reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic, but rather resourcefulness, relevance, and rigor. These are what our students are in search of, and it is up to us to meet the new demands. Technology provides the transportation to meet them.

Technology in the Classroom

This year is my first year to use the Mimio tool in my classroom. In the past I have always use powerpoint and other technology in the classroom. I also have found some really good stuff on I-tunes to use in the classsroom as well. Mimio has had a tremendous impact on my students this year. You can tell they are much more excited when they come in the classroom, we have gotten away from the monotony of using the textbooks for everything and have really come into the new age of technology. Students in todays world need a strong backing in technology to even get a job in the world today. So how can you not incorporate technology in the classroom. It has really transformed my classroom into a succesful learning environment.

Mimio in the Mathematics Classroom

The mimio has helped teachers to see how easy it is to bring mathematics alive in their classrooms. Many middle school teachers have been hesitant to use manipulatives in their classrooms. However, the mimio makes it easy to incorporate manipulatives in a "safe" way! Students are intrigued by the interactiveness and they can't toss anything across the classroom! The possibilities to get students to "see" and "understand" mathematical relationships are endless!

Technology in the classroom

Currently I teach a self contained special education class. My students are high school age but still learning preschool - 2nd grade materials. Since they have seen the material numerous times before, I find it very helpful to use technology when possible. The students love the different games that I have created on Mimio. I also put them on computer games so that I can differentiate instruction. Therefore, my students do not go one day without some sort of technology.

How technology has changed my teaching.

I have been teaching for 34 years and the mimio has had the most profound change in my teaching. I saw the mimio demonstrated at conferences for two years before I finally convinced my prinipal to purchase one for me. I was slow getting started but have started growing with mimioconnect and the training provided by mimio. I love searching for new lessons and activities from mimioconnect and other online sources. Can't really remember what life was like before projectors, doc cameras, and mimio!

How Technology Has Changed in the Classroom

The first time I saw an interactive white board demonstration I wanted one in my classroom. I was so impressed with student engagement. Kids that use to sit and not participate were now a part of the lesson. As an educator we need to stay up with the needs of our students. Technology is a part of their lives. We need to embrace it and not be afraid to learn. I have been given the opportunity to become a Mimio trainer for our district, and have appreciated the training I have had so far. There is so much to learn. Mimio Connect has been a great resource for ideas and quick lesson templates.

Mimio Trainer

Barb,
How exciting to be given the opportunity to become a Mimio Trainer! I am the Mimio Trainer in my district and I love training Mimio. When you see the lightbulb go on and teachers realize all that they can do with Mimio it is really amazing.

We offer Mimio training online, via webinars and face to face - which remains my favorite way. We have been so fortunate to be able to offer scholarships for Mimio Masters for the past few years as well and will have close to 60 Mimio Masters in the district by the end of the year! We are utilizing the Mimio Masters as mentors to teachers in their buildings!

MimioConnect has opened up a whole new venue as now my teachers do not necessarily have to create their own content but can access content that correlates to their lessons and use it as is or make modifications. The variety of lessons helps build that base of ideas for how a teacher can use Mimio to create their own lessons as well.
I hope you enjoy your new role! There are many Mimio Trainers on MC so reach out for support and please share your successes!!

How technology has changed my teaching

I too have been teaching for 30+ years and thought it was too late for me to get on the techno-bandwagon. Fortunately, my teaching partner is a tech whiz and has been very supportive and I was determined that I would go out with a bang, not a whimper. So, I registered for the Mimio Masters classes and learned so much in level that I immediately registered for level 2.

For years I've searched for ideas about how to make abstract musical concepts more concrete with visuals and have sought ways to make learning more interactive and fun, but you can only go so far with hand made flashcards, games and posters. Mimio 7 allows me to realize ideas that previously only existed in my imagination. I love trying these things out with my students and seeing their responses. Mimio will keep my teaching from getting "stale" in my last few years before retirement!

Work smarter not harder!

As a classroom teacher I am always looking for ways to engage my students, but it seem to always require more work! Technology does not come easily for me, but I see the positive results so I am trying to keep up with the learning curve. This was our first year to have the Mimio technology and the kids love it. I just feel like there is so much out there that I could do if I had the time to create the lessons. To help the efficiency issue I plan to work with other teachers in my department to try to make use of Mimioconnect so that we can borrow from one another. I have adapted several websites and that saves so much time!

Working Smarter not harder ...

I, too, feel the same way. Always wanting to trying new things but struggling to find the time to implement as effectively as I would like. One thing that I am trying to do is set aside some time every week to explore mimioconnect and other websites. I am treating that time as a "meeting" so that it is booked and I committing myself to improving my technology infusion.

What a great idea!

I think I will suggest the idea of a meeting time for teachers I work with. I train teachers and all too often one of the obstacles to using new technology that I hear is "no time to learn it" There is only so much that can be taught during a training session - there has to be some usage time to get comfortable with it all.

Scheduling a meeting . . .

I like your idea of "scheduling a meeting" during the week to spend time searching for ways to incorporate technology in the classroom. I know and have seen the benefits of incorporating technology into my classroom but it requires a whole different way of planning. You can't just go to the textbook (although it does sometimes offer some ideas that can be enhanced) but need to expand beyond it. I sometimes feel that there is never time to search out new internet resources. This might become a "meeting" where running over on time is OK with me! Thanks for the idea!

Good for you...

That is a great way to get started using mimio in your classroom! Once you see how easy it is to hook up and begin using, the rest will come. Use lessons you already have to start off. Anything you have on the computer can be incorporated, such as pictures, video, Word documents, etc. If you have a scanner in your building (ours was part of our printer/fax machine), you can scan a worksheet or activity, virtually anything, and use it. Kids (or you) can manipulate the "worksheet" highlighting things, etc. You can get online to show video, pictures, information while teaching a lesson.

There is so much to do with mimio you will be amazed at how it fits into your day. I taught 2nd and 3rd grade and my kids loved it. We used it all the time.... daily language and daily math were big hits! :)

Good luck and start small... keep using mimioconnect too!

Technology in the classroom.

I have had my mimio since last Fall. I LOVE IT!! I teach first grade and it has helped engage students and keep them engaged. We are teaching a generation that has practically been born with a video controller in their hands. If the kids are used to fast paced video games at home, we need something up beat and fast paced in the classroom to keep their attention so that they can learn. I have a mounted projector, a document camera, the mimio, and a sound system in my classroom. However, I do fear that we, as teachers, may forget how to 'teach' without all the tech. We must still have that backup plan prepared for those 'just in case' days. For a few days this spring, our internet system was down. That was inconvenient, but not undoable. I just had to rearrange to show some united streaming videos at a later date. However, due to some virus issues within our network, we had to completely shut down our computers for a couple of days. THAT WAS A NIGHTMARE!!!! There went all the mimio lessons I had prepared, along with interactive websites, etc. That day made me think: I love my technology in the classroom, but are we depending on it too much?

Cha-cha-cha-changes!

Starting last year, I began using a proxima projector and I thought things couldn't get better. I was able to use dynamic online resources such as videos and interactive websites. Then I received a document camera and a whole new dimension was added to my lessons. I could show students model products wihtout having to make tranparencies for the overhead projector, I could save paper by projecting docs and students could use it for showing their work. Now I've added mimio and I feel like the sky is the limit. If I can imagine it, I can make it happen for my kids! I'm no longer bound by textbooks that do not fully line up with our state's standards - I can find my own dynamic resources using one of my fabulous tech tools!

I have not had my mmio very long but my kids love it and it has totally changed my way of teaching. Technology in the classroom

We have used the Smart Board, but the mimio is so convenient....It can be transported so easily from one class to another. I especially like the recorder. It is soooooo effective in teaching math. When I'm working with the teacher, I use the recorder a lot to show them the necessary steps to added info. into mimio.

The students love using the interactive board.....it certainly keeps their interest level.
