Mimio and PowerPoint Presentations

I recently created a PowerPoint presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint. I displayed it using the Mimio projector. Is there anyway to utilize the Mimio wand and pen to mark up (or on or in) the presentation and have it register with on the PowerPoint presentation?

I think what I am saying is I have not found a way to utilize PowerPoints and Mimio, but I want to!

Any suggestions?

Mimio/Powerpoint

This is great info for a new Mimio user. I have plenty of Powerpoint presentations that I use on a regular basis and I'm not sure if it's best to leave them as PPTs or bring them into Mimio. Obviously there are benefits to both programs and it depends on the purpose of the lesson as to which of the presentations would work best. Most people seem to be leaning towards going all Mimio and I might agree with that option. The interaction keeps students focused and involved. My students regularly create their own PPTs to share info with the class. Is it feasible to have students create Mimio lessons to share? Would they have to take turns logging on to my Mimio account or does the program become accessible to a whole class?

Students creating Mimio lessons

If your students create Powerpoints to share with the class, switch it up and have them create interactive presentations with Mimio. You can simply install the MimioStudio software on your student computers if available and they can create lessons very easily. Once you show them some of the basics of how to use the software, they'll find the usage very familiar and powerful. Show them how to integrate Flash animations they may find on websites and you'll turn the learning experiences up even more. good feedback

Thanks for the response. I just found out that our sixth graders are getting their own computer lab. That makes it very feasible to install mimio and get them; started on another way to present. We'll probably learn things together (I'm really new at this stuff).

Learning to use Mimio with Powerpoint

I am still somewhat new to using Mimio. I am hoping thought the class I am taking I will discover all of the things that it can do. I do see a lot of the benefits of using Mimio with my existing PowerPoint presentations. I will be able to use the reveal, spotlight, etc. which I think will help to enhance and emphasize the information for the students. I plan to use Mimio a whole lot more with my PowerPoint's in the upcoming school year and I think eventually I will use Mimio exclusively.

I have used many Powerpoint

I have used many Powerpoint presentations in the past and am new to mimio. For what I figured out so far is that I don't need to change the existing files in order to access the interactive mimio components. If that is correct, then does it make sense to import into mimio? And if so, what are the benefits? Should i continue to create powerpoint or soley switch to mimiio? Thanks

Powerpoint

When I first started using Mimio, I imported my existing Powerpoint presentations into Mimio. I was never a big 'bells and whistles' person with Powerpoint, because I found them distracting and they didn't increase student interaction. Once I had my existing presentations in Mimio, I started adding pages with interaction that reinforced the information presented in the Powerpoint. I also found places in the slides to insert reveals to highlight key points. I found the Mimio tools (spotlight, page reveal, etc.) made the existing lesson more iteresting. As I became more comfortable with Mimio, I switched to MimioStudio for creating new lessons. Now, I don't use Powerpoint at all. You don't have to abandon your Powerpoint presentations, but you'll find yourself working more and more in the MimioStudio software as you become used to it.

I would suggest you check out the Quick Learn sessions offered on mimio.com These free sessions are moderated by very knowledgeable teachers, and can introduce you to the various features of the hardware and software. And - continue to ask questions here!

PowerPoint

I currently help train the faculty on Mimio and one of the features we show them is how to open up a PowerPoint file and annotate on it. They love having the ability to mark it up and not change the original file. They also like to save the file as a PDF and upload it to the Content Management system so their students can refer back to it later on.

Powerpoint

Thanks for the suggestion of using Mimio to add interaction into my powerpoints. I'd hate to lose all of the work that I already put into them, but would like to enhance them with interaction. That is a great idea.

PowerPoint to Mimio transition

I have started importing my existing PowerPoints into Mimio and have been very happy with the results. Yes, I lose "bells and whistles", but I am able to add so much fun interactivity with Mimio that it makes up for the loss! And, now that I am taking the Mimio Advanced Skills class, I expect to have enough knowledge to be able to create any new presentations from scratch in Mimio. The ability to import existing lessons from PowerPoint has really helped us veteran teachers make the transition to Mimio!

You make a good point. Teachers (veteran or not) are sometimes reluctant to try something new, especially when they've devoted so much time to creating a lesson/activity in a different way. Importing PowerPoints into Mimio just expands our options!

It seems that the best way to annotate a PowerPoint is to use PowerPoint's built-in annotation feature as described above.

Importing a PowerPoint presentation into Mimio is a good way to be able to mark it up without having to freeze the screen & use annotations. However, when you import, you lose all your animations so you'd have to do some editing.

I believe a person needs to decide whether they are going to be a PowerPoint user or a Mimio Studio user. When I create new lessons - I use Mimio Studio because I prefer all the wonderful features available. If I want to use an existing powerpoint, I have to decide whether it's more beneficial to use it as a powerpoint or import it into Mimio Studio & edit it.

As an aside & just in case you haven't figured it out yet - you can use the Mimio Pad to advance the powerpoint slides by tapping on the pad with the pen or pushing the buttons located at the top right corner of the pad.

Using Mimio for your PowerPoint

This is a great question and one that has a lot of potential when it comes to using Mimio. You could do a couple things here. First, if you want to remain in your PowerPoint, you could use the Annotation tool in your MimioStudio software. Open the Mimio Tools up and on the lower right of the floating toolbar is the Annoation button. This will essentially freeze the screen allowing you to mark up the presentation using the pen or any of the other MimioStudio tools. Upon clicking the button, you will see a green border around your screen and a camera shutter sound indicating you are in Annotation mode. To get out, simply hit the Esc button on your keyboard or on the Toolbar, click the lower left (Mouse) button. What's great about this is that everytime you enter annotation mode and exit, all of your markups are automatically stored in the Annotation folder in your Gallery for you to continue using, print, save, etc. Another option you have is you can import all of your PowerPoint files along with Word, Adobe Acrobat, movies, sounds, etc right into MimioStudio and use at will. To do this, while in MimioStudio, click on Insert>File and then browse for your file. When finished, your file will be "printed" into MimioStudio allowing you to mark up all you want. PowerPoint

Open your PowerPoint presentation and run the slideshow. Once the presentation runs, right click on the screen and select pointer options. You will see a menu of options allowing you to select from different writing tools, pen, marker, etc. You can also change the color on those pens.

You will have to use the navigation tools on the lower right hand corner of your slide show to change from slide to slide or you an right click again and select pointer. When you are done and end the show, PowerPoint will ask you if you want to save the annotations. All within PowerPoint. Let me know if you have other questions.
