Meet the Parents (also known as the annual school Open House!)

Many educators like to showcase the technology available to them right in their classrooms on Parents' Night or Open House. We, at mimioConnect would like to ask all of our members (who have mimio's in their classrooms) to use them for Open House and let us know: 1) How did you incorporate it into your Open House and 2) Discuss how the parents reacted to the technology. As always, we have another great website to pass along that has some good resources to make any educator's Open House a success: http://www.teachervision.fen.com/open-house/resource/6522.html This resource comes from the TeacherVision website.

sign in

Our Open House is very loosey-goosey, and parents don't usually spend much time in each room. We are required to have parent sign in - so I'm going to have the mimio pad handy, and have parents and students sign in using the pad. The signatures will show up on my board, and from there (if interest and time) I can play with the signatures a bit (text recognition, and such).

Open House

I use a mimio notebook file that includes information about me, what their student will be learning, and classroom rules and expectations. I use lots of reveals, pop reveals, hidden words in background colors, and erase reveals. I allow the new students and parents to play with the files as I am discussing things with other parents/students. The students and parents love it. They are always anxious to start right away.

So many opportunities to share the mimio with parents...

When I first read the topic I was excited to see what others were planning to do to incorporate the mimio into their open house or parent night. Then I began thinking that I really did need to read others ideas because our Open House night seems to be changing and the parents are not expected to stay in our room for a while. Not quite sure what to expect for this year. I think I will try to create two different files that I can share with the parents...and will chose which is actually shown depending on the time allowed. I did read where someone said they might have the parents display afternoon or morning transportation. I think this is a great idea. It gets the parents involved and then you also have this information readily available. I'll keep checking back and see what other suggestions or thought people come up with. I usually would share a powerpoint, but as I said this past year the time was really limited and we didn't even have time to share the powerpoint.

Open House

We no longer have Open House but we do have a parent meeting night before school starts. I am thinking about making a slide where they move their child's name to show me what their child will do after school. We have some that ride the bus, walk, are picked up by parents or go to the school program. I will also add my powerpoint to mimio so I can add all the tricks to show them what their students will be doing in class. I think this might also keep them interested! :)

Open House

Depending upon the grade level, the open house content varies in our district. The high school level, the objective is to give out the syllabus for the class, basic schedules, teacher website info. On the middle school level, the teachers speak about a typical day, what the students will be studying for the year, teacher websites, class expectations. On the elementary level, a bit about the subjects, daily routines, room parent information, assessments that will be done, class newsletters, etc. This coming year will have an added topic for our parents which will be the opening of our parent portal. Parents will be given information on what they will be able to log on to view about their child/children, like demographic info, attendance, grades.

Open House

With the 2009/2010 school year almost over I have started thinking about the 2010/2011 school year. I would like to have a mimio presentation for my parents for Open House. I am playing around with a few ideas in my head. I definitely want to have part of the mimio presentation be an activity with reveals and pop balloons that parents can then go up to the board and try or use the mimio pad to try. I think that mimio is just as exciting for adults as it is for kids. Plus it will be a great icebreaker for parents to start talking to each other and having some fun with Spanish introductory vocabulary.

parents night

I agree,i think parents will find mimio as exciting as their children. I'm thinking about sharing a few lessons for parents to participate in as if they were their child. They will then have a hands on approach of how mimio is used in kindergarten.

Parnet night

I am thinking I will have some slides about the routines, expectations, etc... I also would like to include a few lessons that my students will be completing in the first few weeks as well. That way they will be able to see some of the activities their students will be participating in.

Open House

I will be building a mimio show for my parents this year. I will introduce myself, tell them 5th grade expectations, etc. This will allow the parents who are standing around to have something to do until I am frss.

Open House

I, too, have always used a powerpoint slide presentation at Open House to inform parents of classroom curriculum and procedures. I plan to make a mimio for Open House for next year. It should be fun to add in all the great tricks I have learned through my mimio classes. The parents will have an idea of the exciting technology that we have at our school and how it will keep their students engaged in lessons. I guess I'd better get started on it now because once the beginning of the school year comes, there won't be time!

open house

I have used a power point in the past and hope to incorporate it into mimio and add some of the fun tricks mimio provides and some sample lessons. I agree this presentation should be started during the summer. The start of the school year is just around the corner and time is extremely precious.

Open House

I'v always done a PowerPoint slideshow for open house night to review the curriculum, but NOW I can't wait to redo it and use Mimio instead. It certainly shows off the technology that we have and makes the presentation a lot more interesting and exciting!

Family Learning Day

I received a grant for 2 mimios, one of which stays in my room, the other floats around the building. I usually do a powerpoint presentation of what parents can expect for their child in 4 grade. This year I used the mimio to do it and the parents thought it was very cool and I was able to "brag up" the grant a little bit, with the added bonus that I have a school board member's daughter in my room.

My mimio was a gift from the

My mimio was a gift from the PTO. I used it during open house and it WOW-ed
the parents. I used sound clips, i imported my syllabus and had basic need to know information. The parents really enjoyed the presentation.

At our school, many teachers

At our school, many teachers used their new Mimios to demonstrate their curriculum this year. Since our open house was early in the school year, teachers used some pictures from last year but no one minded. Using the reveals and audio files, as well as web links added pizazz in some cases to imported Powerpoint presentations. Parents were invited to participate in the interactive program and they loved it!

open house

This is just a great idea I am passing on...I a former teacher...however, I now train teachers using mimio--they love using the spotlight (star) for open house. They place the students pictures and/or names and put the spot light up...as the students come in they are to find their picture by moving the spotlight. Most likely will have to use last year's pictures...or if open house is done after school actually opens, then take pictures then.
