Looking for iPad Reading & Math apps

Does anyone have experience using an ipad2 in the classroom? This year I am assigned to teach 1st Grade and am particularly interested in hearing about your experiences using the Reading/Math apps....

Good App

I found this new app for kids called Maddie and Matt which aims on teaching kids the best social graces and learn good manners. It's very educational and informative to kids, which is rare for kiddie apps these days.

Thank you!

Thank you for all of the app suggestions. I just received an iPad and I want to justify keeping it, so it doesn't get passed on to another teacher. I am a technology teacher and I teach over 700 kids in the course of a week. I want to find ways to reach many with just 1. I am looking forward to checking these out!

Great APPS

Thank you so much for all the great resources! I use the iPad but there is so many Apps that sometimes it's hard to sift through all of them. I have found that using the iPad is a great motivator for students - it's a great way to differentiate instruction.

Educational Apps for the iPad

Here are some of my all time favorite apps, thus far, for using the iPad in the classroom.

1. TED -- this is a great resource for videos on ALL types of topics

2. Idioms -- this app is great because it provides illustrations for various idioms as well as an explanation of where it came from and multiple examples of how it can used

3. Bluster -- a super fun app that allows students to work on rhyming words, prefixes and synonyms by grade level either as a single player, team or versus.

4. Math ninja -- is my 5 year old son's favorite game. You can decide if the problems are going to be a mix of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, only one of them, or a couple of them. They are given problems to solve to earn fake money to fight off the evil tomatosan. It is really cute and kid friendly.

5. Rocket math -- this is another fun one where they can build their own rocket by solving problems to earn fake monies.

6. Pizza Fractions -- this is a very simple app but really helps elementary students work on fractions using something most of them love...pizza!

7. iWriteWords -- a great and fun way for students to practice writing their alphabet.

8. Stack the states -- this is a social studies app but really educational and super fun for kids and adults. They even came out with one for countries.

9. Parallel Circuits -- this is a science app but my 5 year old wanted to know more about connecting batteries to light bulbs to create light so we found this app to help him do it on his own.

10. Evernote -- this is more for the teacher than the students and if you don't have an app like this already on your iPad you need to get one immediately. I no longer take paper and pencil with me to meetings because I keep all my notes in Evernote and it syncs automatically with my smartphone and desktop computer. I don't have to worry about where I put my notes or which one is the most recent. You can upload documents and photos in here as well and everything syncs so that it is always up-to-date regardless of what machine you are using to access it.

A great place to find educational apps and information is: http://www.iear.org/

Also make sure you have downloaded iTunes and are searching the App store to read ratings and reviews of educational apps before you download or purchase. It is easier to search apps on the computer than the iPad if you don't know exactly what you are looking for.

IPAD apps

Wow! Thank you for supplying such a great list of apps. I can't wait to try some of these out! There's also a really neat one called Science House: Video Science that houses many science related videos such as informative as well as lab experiments for students to watch; and it's free!

How are you using the iPad and Mimio together

Hi

I am interested in knowing from everyone how they are using the iPad and Mimio/ MimioClassroom products together. For some people this appears to be an issue and they are purchasing iPad rather than iPad and Mimio. What would you say to them?

iPad and Mimio

Unfortunately, unless you use an iPad app that allows you to interact with your classroom computer, you are unable to access certain programs on the iPad - MimioStudio included (as well as flash and java....) Applications like Splashtop will enable you to use your iPad to access your classroom computer, thus using your iPad like a tablet or a MimioPad. Personally, one does not negate the other. I use Mimio products in my classroom where appropriate, and use iPads where appropriate - I do not use them together. The iPad, while awesome, does not replace Mimio products in my classroom - it is just one more piece of technology I can use to help my students interact with and understand concepts taught,.

iPad and Mimio

I sometimes use Splashtop to run Mimio Studio but it is frustrating due to the lag time. I am happy that soon I will have a MimioPad and things will run more smoothly.

Some apps to try

Hi, I have limited experience with the IPad, but am starting to use it more with a couple of resource students. Here are some of the apps we have tried:

Games
1. Cookie Doodle (.99) Make different types of cookie dough by adding ingredients, stir, roll bake and add sprinkles and icing.
2. Shape Builder Lite (free) A puzzle is presented and you can put the pieces of the puzzle together

Phonics and Spelling
1. Word Families (free) Several different areas – word families flashcards, spelling words and unscrambling words
2. Pocket Phonics lite (free) The Lite version has two different games. A word game where sounds are given and you need to pick the letters that make those sounds to form a word. Also a letter writing game where a letter/sound combination is provided and you trace the letter
3. Spelling Bug (free) Presents a picture and letters that have to be put in the correct space to make the word

Reading
1. Early Reader (free) Four different sections that focus on letter sounds, sight words, sounding out common words and saying simple sentences. No pictures
2. In My Dreams (.99) A short story book that requires you to drag a picture and word into place to activate the story animation. As well, there is a signed version.
3. The Cat in The Hat (free) This is an interactive book that can be read to you or you can read. Then the pictures are touched.

Sentence Building
1. Sentence Builder (3.99) A picture is presented and you have to move a spinner to change the words provided to form a sentence.
2. Cubric (free) For making sentences, there are pictures presented for each word and you have to match the picture to the word.

iPad VPP and Mimio

I think there are many of us on the same road with the iPads. Tracy T. listed some great links to learn about the iPad.

If you are purchasing apps for your school you need to get a VPP account (volume purchasing). http://www.apple.com/itunes/education/

Here's an interesting post about an app I have not tried.

Free Apps

Don't know if you use Twitter, but some good people to follow to learn about free apps or reduced apps are TCEA and app4ed. Sometimes the app store runs specials on apps. Have fun with your students!

iPad2 in the classroom

I have done some research into what Apps are available for education because my district as well is beginning to incorporate the iPad2 into our instruction. Here are some of the better sites and Apps that I've found:

http://teachwithyouripad.wikispaces.com - a website that has many apps categorized by subject and grade level.

https://sites.google.com/site/bloomsapps/- this site incorporates Bloom's Taxonomy into the Apps it suggests for more effective teaching and student learning.

https://ipad2educate.wikispaces.com/home- this resource has apps grouped by subjects.

http://www.ipadineducation.co.uk/iPad_in_Education/Links.html- this site offers links to free educational links, forum discussions, video tutorials, "must have" apps, and much more.

http://www.ipadcurriculum.com/- this site highlights appropriate apps for education and has a built-in search engine to find apps by grade level and/or subject.

http://linskenspresentations.wikispaces.com/iPad+Applications- this site offers ipad articles, applications appropriate for education, current events, library and research, textbooks, screen sharing, subject area, organizational, project ideas, and accessibilty apps.

http://gizmodo.com/5507569/gizmodos-essential-ipad-apps- a look at essential apps for the iPad user!

Hopefully you'll find some of these useful.

Thank you! Our school recently received 90 iPads. We just completed some training on using them, but are interested in finding apps, etc. to use them to the greatest of our and the iPads ability. This will come in handy to look further into and pass along to others!
