Student Impact for National Boards

Hi Everyone,

I am a candidate for National Boards and for one of my entries I want to use my Training for Professional Development on the Mimio. I use it all the time and I know that it impacts my students, but it seems whatever I say, it is questioned...I know they are engaged, how do you know, they are involved,, how do you know? Other than scores being raised, could anyone help by sharing some ideas on how mimio impacts students learning.

I know that my kids love it, are motivated, participate, but they want such an exact. I would appreciate any insights. I guess it has to be measureable. I want to give as much evidence that this truly impacts students learning without sounding vague.

National Boards

I think that mimio training does impact student learning. I would ask parents and/or the principal to write how they observe the students being more engaged and parents could give you quotes from the students concerning why they like the mimio. Do you help other teachers in your building with the mimio. If so, you are impacting the learning of their students-- those teachers could write how their students are more engaged or whatever they observe. You can then use quotes from these letters as part of your evidence.

I hope that this is what you are trying to find. When you are working on National Boards, it is a good idea to find a support group in your area to help.

National Boards

I have National Board certification, and renewed that certification in 2010. I definitely used my Mimio training, and the use of the technology in my classroom for my renewal. In fact, one of my videos I submitted centered around the use of technology - specifically Mimio. You can use MimioVote questions to build formative assessment into your lessons, and show student impact by the results of those questions. I agree with Teresa, get a letter from a parent, administrator, or peer outlining how the use of technology engages your students in the learning. Make sure you are including observable student objectives in your lessons - that way any observer can see what outcome you are expecting with your lesson.

Do you do any staff training with Mimio - teaching other staff members how to use the technology effectively? You can include that as evidence, as well.

Thank you Teresa and Meribeth for your insights and comments. It is tricky because everything does have to be evidence. Just saying a student was engaged can be asked, how do I know? I do use the mimio votes and see how engaged, but I will embed assessments into lesson and that way I can have some real data.

Anything else you think of would be greatly appreciated.

Meribeth I have trained other staff in using mimio, but other than collaborating how can I evidence that students improved. Is asking another teacher enough?

A statement from an administrator, or maybe a printout of a lesson with vote questions (and accompanying assessment results) could possible serve as evidence. As with anything NB, you have to sell yourself! Make a case for the technology improving your student's achievement, and back that up with statements and any other evidence you think might work. I know the box will be due before the end of the school year, but maybe take some first semester data and tie the use of technology into increased grades. Think outside the box (no pun intended) and brainstorm how the technology affects your students in other ways - self confidence, attitude toward school, etc.

Maribeth thank you for your feedback. I am asking for some quotes from a couple of other teachers. I definitely have included self confidence, engagement, attitude. However, those are hard to prove so show evidence.

I did teach a lesson on cause and effect using Mimio where in other years used just the work book pages but because Mimio can cover so much and in so many ways, I know my kids greatly improved with that concept. I probably will have to keep adding to this one. I can do all the above, but the entry wants student impact.
