Summary:This is a one-block lesson (80 min.) made for 8th grade Physical Science. It provides an overview of the basic operation of the fuel cell. It is not quantitative except students clearly see that the electrolysis reaction produces twice as much hydrogen as oxygen. It does not include much info about application in real cars or comparison to gasoline engines. The lesson is a nice review and integration of forms and transformations of energy, forces and chemical equations.
The fuel cells pictured are reversible solar-hydrogen PEM cells from the Dr. FuelCell Model Car Kit by Heliocentris. The lab activities can be omitted or used with other cells.
