Question:

I'm not sure how to ask a question to a MimioConnect user who has posted a lesson on the website?

  • Submitted By:

Answer:

Welcome to the community! You have asked an intriguing question, one of which has a couple of ways that it can be answered. As a community member, everyone has the ability to contact each other without ever having to enter an email address. Messages can be delivered and received through our "member profiles." To do this simply click on the user's name (in blue). On the next screen, above their name should be a phrase that says, "send message." Click on that and fill out the form and send. The recipient, when they've logged in, will see a number 1 next to the "check mail" in their profile box off to the right. This means that they have a message waiting. When they respond back, you'd get a check mail notice as well. I had said there was another way to ask a question. The other option is to leave a comment right below the posted lesson that the user has uploaded. With this method sometimes you run the risk of the user not checking the comments on a regular basis, so it could go unanswered for awhile. On the positive side of putting a question in the comment field, there might be other community members who have the same question as you and would benefit from a response or they might even have a solution to the question that the user might not need to respond giving you a variety of ways to look at a solution. Whichever method you choose, enjoy exploring the many, wonderful lessons that have been posted and if you get the chance check out the Ask a Master section for more tips and suggestions to enhance your Mimio experience!

Question:

My district has switched to the Google Apps for Education platform for communication, collaboration and its productivity package of writing tools. Can Google docs and Google presentations be inserted into a Mimio notebook page like Word and PowerPoint?

  • Submitted By:
    Sharon M.

Answer:

Thank you for this very, relevant question since many districts are beginning to move to "cloud-based" applications and management due to 21st century demands like acquisition of specific information literacy and technology skills as well as recent initiatives like B.Y.O.D.(bring your own device or technology) in our schools. With reference to your question as to whether or not Google docs and presentations can be inserted into a Mimio notebook, the answer is yes! Here are the steps that you'd need to take. As I'm sure you are aware of, your Google docs are not stored on your local computer like traditional documents. They are stored in your "cloud" to be easily shared out with others. So, what this means is that you'll need to download the file to your computer before you can insert it into the Mimio notebook. To do this, just have your file open in your Google documents, then go to File and choose download. You will have a choice of downloading as a .pdf or Word document (if you have a document opened) or .pdf or PowerPoint (if it's a Google presentation opened). Once they have been downloaded and saved somewhere on your computer as one of those downloadable types, they can now be inserted into a notebook page. Just keep in mind that those files, once inserted into the notebook, become static and no changes can be made or animations activated to the documents themselves. Remember that you still have the originals back in your Google docs home. For more tips and suggestions, check out the other Ask a Master questions and answers on MimioConnect!

Question:

I would like to create one list of my students that can be duplicated for each subject that I teach to them. How can this be done?

  • Submitted By:
    Amanda M.
  • Date:
    Oct. 29, 2011

Answer:

This is good question which addresses many teachers' needs who teach multiple subjects to the same set of students. Here are the steps involved.
1.Create one class list in Mimio Grade book.
2.Go to File then Export.
3.Choose Export class information.
4.Choose a location of where you'd like to save the class. (You can leave it Untitled because when it gets imported back in, it will be a copy of the original). You will be able to rename it later.
5.Now, go back to File in the grade book, and choose Import, then Class. Find the untitled (.mva) file that you saved and open it.
6. From the drop down menu of classes, you should see a copy of the class you exported. It will have a [1] after it. Choose this class.
7.Go over to “Actions” on the right side of the page and click on “Edit class.” Now you can rename this class to another subject. You can continue this process for however many subjects you teach to the same set of students.
For additional assistance with the grade book, there is a QuickLearn session that is being offered for FREE which also takes you through a lot of Grade book set up and troubleshooting. Here is the link if you are interested in checking out the session: http://mimio.dymo.com/en-US/Training/Quick-Learn.aspx (scroll down to the #10 session). Question:

Can I create a slide show in Mimio with animations or is the best way to create in PowerPoint and use Mimio tools when showing?

Answer:

Thank you so much for your recent submission to Ask a Master. We are so glad to have you as part of our wonderful online community of educators! You are wondering about using PowerPoint slide shows with Mimio. You can always import your PowerPoint document into MimioNotebook. Just remember that when you import a PowerPoint into Mimio it becomes a static file, meaning that only the content will be brought in losing all interactivity you had in the file (such as hyperlinks, transitions and other flash animation). The good news is that you can now add your own interactivity to your file in a new way using the Mimio Software! Try using Screen Annotation or the many wonderful reveals you can find right in the Gallery to get your students involved in your lesson. If you have any specific file that you would like to add to your lesson (picture, audio, flash, video) you can easily insert it right into Mimio Notebook by using the “INSERT FILE” button located on your toolbar. I hope you have found this helpful and please let me know if there is anything else you may need as we are always here to help. Have a wonderful weekend!

Question:

How can I share a lesson with a group after I have already uploaded it to MimioConnect?

  • Submitted By:
    Stephanie C.
  • Date:
    Oct. 2, 2011

Answer:

This is a question that has a fairly simple fix. What you will need to do is click on your “View profile” next to your picture. From there, choose “Lesson Plans and Activities.” A list of the lessons that you’ve uploaded will appear to the left. Click on the lesson you need to modify. Once the lesson comes up, you should have a few tabs across the top, one of which allows you to “edit.” Click on that tab. Scroll through the form that you originally filled out but this time when you come to “Groups,” which is right below the “file attachment,” choose the group you’d like to add it to as well. Lastly, scroll to the bottom of this page and click on “Update.” Now it’s been added to the group. Question:

How can I use an image from the gallery and put a number or name on it, but still have the ability to move it around the screen?

    Angie Owen

    Aug. 23, 2011

Answer:

Thank you for your recent submission to Ask a Master. We are so glad to have you as part of our wonderful online community of educators! You are wondering how to put a name and number on an image from the Gallery. This is very simple and easy to do. Once you have your image in your notebook file then use your text option to add the name and number to the screen. You can easily move the text around your screen by using the selector tool and dragging it. Once you position your text in the correct place (with your image) then use your selector tool to select the image, number and label. You will know they are all selected when you see the four white handles around each object. The other option to select all three is to hold down the Control Key on your keyboard and while holding it down left click once on each of the three objects. Either way, once you have all objects selected go to the top menu in your notebook and choose FORMAT>GROUPING>GROUP. Now, your image and text will be grouped together and can then move around the screen as one object. I hope you have found this helpful and please let me know if there is anything else you need as we are always here to help. Have a great weekend!

Question:

How can I incorporate an eBook into a Mimio lesson?

  • Submitted By:
    Elizabeth L.
  • Date:
    Aug. 16, 2011

Answer:

There are many good quality eBooks on the Internet and they add so much to your Mimio interactive teaching in your classroom when used effectively. Depending upon your objectives, there are a couple of things that you can do to incorporate eBooks. If you want to project the pages of the eBook for classroom use, such as marking them up, then you could project them on your board, outside of a Mimio notebook page but have the toolbar on the screen. Click the annotation button on the toolbar (last icon in lower right hand side of toolbar) and the screen will freeze to allow you to mark up the page. This would allow you to highlight text, analyze paragraphs, isolate vocabulary, determine author’s style, study images, etc. To leave annotation mode, click the button to the left of this button (called the mouse). This will “unfreeze” the page so you can move onto additional pages and continue the process. All annotations get saved in your gallery for future use or reference in the "Screen annotations" folder. Many of the above mentioned uses can also be accomplished through another feature called “screen clipping.” The screen clip method allows you to be more precise with particulare images or text that you want to concentrate on instead of whole pages at a time. Screen clips actually get placed right into your notebook page. Let's say no illustrations are used in the book. You could create/add your own to the pages to bring the words of the eBook to life that you choose to screenclip into the notebook. Students can even draw their own sketches of what certain parts of the book means to them and add them to the pages in the Mimio Notebook file instead of using the ones that may have been provided by the book as well. The possibilities are limitless. Get creative and let your imagination carry you into new ways at instructing interactively and engaging your students! As always, we encourage you to check out the other posts on Ask a Master for many more tips and suugestions.

Question:

How can I ask an opinion question with Mimio Vote? There isn't a "right" answer, and I don't want to have the smile face, check mark etc... to show up denoting a "correct" answer. Thank you for your help!

  • Submitted By:
    Kris Kampovitz
  • Date:
    Aug. 10, 2011

Answer:

You are asking if it is possible to ask an opinion question using MimioVote - one with no right or wrong answer. Yes, you can! This type of question can quickly and easily be done using the QuickVote feature. You can access QuickVote on the Mimio Tool bar by choosing Applications. Once you have the QuickVote toolbar up, do the following: Choose your class and start polling. When you start polling, you are given answer options - choose the option you want (T/F, AB, etc.) When students have all given their answer/opinion, stop polling. At that point, you are given the opportunity to choose the right answer, or to choose no answer . You can then bring up your question results, which will give you a pie graph of the class answers.

UPDATE:

MimioStudio 8 is now available for download at www.mimio.com This version includes many upgrades that have been suggested by users, including some upgrades for MimioVote. Now, with MimioStudio 8, you can create questions within your .ink file where a correct answer is not shown when polling is stopped. Opinion questions can now be asked right in your file! When a question box is on your page, click on the icon in the lower right corner (it looks like a little sun.) This takes you to a menu that gives you choices for denoting the correct answer. If you don’t want the correct answer shown when polling is stopped, choose the blank box. Mimio just keeps getting better and better! Download the newest version, and check out other great new features.

Question:

I don't understand the process of how to put lesson content that is posted by Teachers’ Domain into my gallery. When I've downloaded these lessons, they come zipped. I do what is necessary to "unzip" them but then I don't know what to do with the various parts. Could you please help?

  • Date:
    Aug. 8, 2011

Answer:

Thank you for asking such a pertinent question. It is one that many users are interested in learning more about. You had asked about the process of utilizing the Teachers Domain content into your Mimio notebook and gallery.
1.The process starts with you downloading the content that you selected, from their site, into a folder you designate on your computer. I personally have created a folder in my own "My documents" called Teachers Domain to download content from their website.
2.Open this folder which should have a "zipped" folder. Click on that to unzip or extract the individual files for the content. Depending upon what was downloaded, you'll have single images, video clips (usually in mp4 format) and/or interactive "flash" content (usually in .swf format).
3.The next step should be to open a notebook page and the gallery. I usually create a new folder in my gallery before I insert the new content topics, (using a name from that content to identify it).The new folder icon for the gallery is the first icon at the top of the gallery.
4.Now, from the icon choices across the top of the gallery, with your newly created folder open/highlighted in the gallery list, click on the 2nd icon (insert file). It will instruct you to browse for the content to open. Locate the files on your computer, choose them and click on open. Subfolders will be created in your folder depending upon what you are opening. Pictures are placed into an image folder and interactive or video content is placed in a multimedia folder in your gallery.
If you run into problems inserting videos, like getting an "invalid file format" message, you may need to install a K-Lite Codec Pack to allow you to view the clips. Here is the link to the MimioConnect post which directs you to that site for installing: http://www.mimioconnect.com/content/lesson/video_codec_pack_windows.
There are also some good converter websites (www.zamzar.com) that will convert your video clip to a file such as (.avi) to be inserted into your gallery if you still experience difficulties.
There are many good resources found on MimioConnect from the Teachers Domain site to use in your classroom. I encourage you to browse the wide variety to enhance your instruction and student learning.
